August 31, 2024

By default, Photoshop does not support WebP images, meaning you cannot open or edit WebP files directly in Photoshop. However, by using a simple and free plugin, you can enable Photoshop to import and save images in the WebP format. Once you have the plugin installed, you’ll be able to open any WebP images in Photoshop and save them in other formats like JPG, PNG, and more. In this article, you will learn how to add the WebP plugin to Photoshop, allowing you to work with WebP images without any issues.

1. Downloading the WebP Plugin for Photoshop

The first step is to download the WebP plugin for Photoshop. This plugin is available for both Windows and Mac and can be found on GitHub.

The installation process for the plugin is very straightforward—it involves simply pasting the plugin into the correct folder. To install the plugin, navigate to where Photoshop is installed on your computer and find the “Plug-ins” folder. The typical installation path for Photoshop is something like this:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017\Plug-ins

If you cannot locate the installation folder for Photoshop, follow these steps:

  • Open the Start menu and type “Photoshop.”
  • Right-click on the Photoshop application and select “Open file location.”
  • Right-click on the Photoshop shortcut that appears and select “Open file location” again.
  • Find the folder named “Plug-ins,” open it, and paste the plugin file that you downloaded earlier into this folder.
